Pep Guardiola could drop Man City midfielder after poor performance [Opinion]

|

Rodri was one of many players who underperformed in Manchester City’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, so Pep Guardiola might consider taking him out of the spotlight ahead of next Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa.

The 26-year-old made a costly error that led to Tottenham scoring their winning goal, playing a dangerous pass to Rico Lewis in the defensive third who had his pocket pinched. Rodri didn’t have a good game, being rated 4/10 from Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News, so he needs to improve.

Rodri has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with five assists. The Spanish international has missed only one league game and has amassed 1738/1890 minutes of playing time (91.9%), so Guardiola has leaned heavily on him.

Rodri hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks, however, and City have suffered three defeats in their last eight league games, so Pep might be weighing up a change. Kalvin Phillips would be the one to replace him and hasn’t been at his best this season either, so it might be a bigger gamble making such a change as he’s only played 18 minutes of top-flight football.
