The City manager Roberto Mancini was his usual cool cat self today when quizzed by drooling hacks over Manchester united’s admission that Wayne Rooney wants to leave them…

‘He is a united player. It’s not correct to speak about that situation. I have respect for him, for Ferguson, for united. I want to speak only about my players…It’s not my problem. I’m City manager. I have a lot of problems with my players. It’s important for me to focus on tomorrow’s game.’

‘Rooney is a great player but I think he’ll stay at united…he’s an important player for united.’

However, Mancio did not rule out a City bid for the cheerful happy go lucky scouser’s signature but continued to play a straight bat:

‘In the summer if there is a player who can change things for us we’ll talk about it…City are developing every month, every year. The people here have big ambitions.’

At times last season, it was noticeable that very often Rooney carried the rags but those images of him gasping and sweating profusely at the World Cup before treating us to a far from finely tuned upper torso at the end of each crap performance have many Blues wondering whether or not the Evertonian could handle the intensive training at City.

It’s a story that will run and run. The longer it does, the more damage it is sure to do to united’s already creaking campaign.
