Ship has sailed for Man City to sign 24 y/o Ilkay Gundogan replacement [Opinion]

Ilkay Gundogan has an uncertain future at Manchester City as his contract is up this summer and he’s no closer to signing a new deal. The 32-year-old’s had an extension on the table since 2021 but has yet to put pen to paper, so Pep Guardiola might need to locate a replacement.

One player on City’s radar was Houssem Aouar whose contract is up in the coming months, but the 24-year-old might not be considered a transfer target after enduring a disappointing campaign with Olympique Lyonnais. Aouar has made only seven appearances in all competitions this season due to injury.

The French international featured just once for l’OM before mid-October and played in only one game between mid-November and mid-January, so it’s hard to see City wanting him over the summer.

Aouar had a hand in 10 goals from 29 Ligue 1 starts last season, creating 38 chances, making 70 successful dribbles, having 46 tackles with 20 interceptions and completing 86.9% of his passes, resulting in interest from a host of clubs in Europe.

But the 24-year-old hasn’t been able to get a run of games together this campaign, so City surely wouldn’t take a gamble even if they’ve held an interest since 2020. Aouar could still sign a new deal at the Groupama Stadium too, so he might not be on the market.
