Significant Funds or yet more spin?

In a move that can only be seen as an attempt to get supporters on side during the takeover speculation, City chairman John Wardle today promised to make ‘significant funds’ available in the summer.

Speaking to the official site Wardle had this to say:

‘Plans are being made for the new season. It is important that our supporters know that whatever happens with regard to potential new investment, The Board will support the manager in the transfer market.”

‘Funds were made available by The Board for squad strengthening in the winter window, ” said Mr Wardle, “although we were unsuccessful in bringing in all the players we targeted. We will provide significant support again this summer.”

So what exactly is going on?

Reading between the lines this is yet another example of MCFC’s chief executive’s brand of spin.

It is obvious that the supporters seek ‘significant investment’ in a playing squad that simply isn’t up to standard for this division.

It is also obvious to supporters that little effort was made to strengthen the obvious weakness in attack during the January window (Mpenza was brought in after it closed).

If therefore ‘significant support’ is simply a re-run of the previous four transfer windows then this statement can be taken for what it is; little more than words meant to placate.

It is perhaps on a par with the classical ‘the debt is manageable we don’t have to sell Shaun’ prior to selling Shaun Wright-Phillips to ease the debt.

What price, if the current board remains, a statement at the end of August suggesting ‘significant funds’ were made available to the manager but we were unsuccessful in bringing in the players we wanted.

It is apparent to me that this is little more than a smokescreen that is being used to get opinion back on side in the wake of Ray Ranson’s statement. It is, in my opinion, yet another example of the clear contempt with which this club holds its ‘customers’ in this day and age.

Smoke and mirrors aren’t what are needed; change at the top is. We are all far too battle scarred to believe anything that comes from the current board.
