Based on last night’s performance, match referee Damir Skomina should not officiate another Champions League tie. His constant poor decision making nearly made me want to vomit.
Meanwhile, Damir’s assistants should also hold their heads in shame for not challenging their fellow Slovakian’s howlers.
If there was ever an argument for introducing VAR then the challenge on Sane, who had a clear shot on goal while he was within the penalty area, hacked down and then not even acknowledge by the officials…this incident was it.
Summary – if there were a ‘Hall of Fame’ for poor decision making that incident would easily make the top 10.
"He said to me: 'It was a penalty!'"
Leroy Sané was denied one of the most blatant penalties ever last night ????♂️
It's clear to see why VAR will be used in the Champions League from next season… pic.twitter.com/biJ1WD9iLz

Referee and assistants – 0/10.
Rate the players, out of 10.
Ederson – 6
With less than a minute on the clock, Ishak Belfodil had too much time to squeeze the ball in-between Ederson’s legs. What was our number one shot-stopper thinking?
He did make amends later on in the first half with a beautiful save from the same striker.
Kyle Walker – 6
Carded on 66 minutes – could have been red. Kyle showed his usual pace and gave the opposition something to think about.
Vincent Kompany – 5.5
Missing for most of the match.
Nicolas Otamendi – 5
Not blessed with it, but on this occasion, he must have left his pace in the dressing room.
Aymeric Laporte – 5
Didn’t seem to do a lot. Involved in one or two half decent passes.
Fernandinho – 5.5
Struggled with Hoffenheim’s slick and quick passing. The game, at times, looked beyond him.
Ilkay Gundogan – 4
Should have gone off a lot earlier – poor, poor, poor.
Doubt if he will start against Liverpool on Sunday.
David Silva – 10
The home supporters witnessed one of Spanish Dave’s best performances of the season. Graced the field with oodles of panache.
A masterclass in midfield, majestic winning goal four minutes from time.
Raheem Sterling – 6.5
Gave the home side defenders plenty to think about. Lots of attacking runs, lots of energy.
Sergio Aguero – 7
Made his 7th-minute equalizer look easy when in fact it was far from it.
Missed a half-chance when the ball came head-height. Sadly Kun blasted the shot over the goal.
Leroy Sane – 8
SHOULD have been awarded a clear-cut penalty.
Ran the defenders ragged with his blistering pace. I would have awarded him MOTM but for Dave’s excellent display.
John Stones – 6.5
Should have replaced Nico earlier than 64 mins.
Bernardo Silva – 7
Should have replaced Gundogan a lot earlier (68 mins). Must start against Liverpool.
Riyad Mahrez – 5
Replaced Raheem with only 14 minutes remaining. Did okay.
