Sergio Gomez was given his first start for Manchester City in Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Sevilla and put in a good performance, but he wasn’t the only new-boy to shine. Manuel Akanji replaced John Stones at centre-back and could now keep his place ahead of Saturday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur after impressing against Sevilla.
The 27-year-old made his City debut at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium and delivered a fine showing to vindicate Pep Guardiola’s faith. It was a gamble to throw him in the deep end for a Champions League away game, but the decision paid off.

Joe Bray of Manchester Evening News gave Akanji a player rating of 7/10 and said he fit ‘seamlessly’ into the defence while being good in possession. Jamie Spencer of 90min gave the Swiss international a player rating of 7/10 and said he looked ‘assured’ at the back.
Against Sevilla, Akanji played for 90 minutes, had 86 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 89.9% of his 79 passes, created two chances, made one tackle, had one interception, made three clearances and was fouled once.
Guardiola said before the game that Akanji was ready to make his City debut and he was proven right after seeing his performance.
