Stats show Man City player delivered good performance in Italy defeat [Opinion]

|

England suffered a 1-0 defeat to Italy at the Giuseppe Meazza on Friday evening, but Phil Foden is one of a few players who can be pleased with their efforts on the night. The 22-year-old started on the flank and tried to make things happen when in possession, but his teammates weren’t always on his wavelength.

Only one player in England’s starting eleven created more chances than the Manchester City midfielder, only one player completed a higher percentage of passes, only one player made more successful dribbles and only one player whipped in more crosses, so Foden can say he tried to get the Three Lions back into the game.

Sky Sports gave the 22-year-old a player rating of 8/10 and said he was England’s ‘best player’. BBC Sport’s player rating had Foden at a 4.5/10, but only two outfield players managed a better score. The Guardian gave the Englishman a rating of 4/10 but noted that he had some ‘encouraging moments’ in the first half. The Daily Mail gave Foden a player rating of 6.5/10 and said he caused problems.

Against Gli Azzurri, Foden played for 90 minutes, had 59 touches, completed 92.9% of his 42 passes, created two chances, whipped in three crosses with 33% finding a teammate, made one tackle, had one successful dribble and was fouled twice. His efforts weren’t enough to turn the tide, however.
