You couldn’t do much without finding something about him before his signing and since Raheem Sterling arrived you can do much without finding something more about him! Which, given the size of the move, is understandable really that someone will always have something to say.

When our captain says something though, as he has to, you listen!

Vincent Kompany has first hand experience of playing against Sterling as a Liverpool player, his arrival at City means he can play with him and his arrival is something he feels sends out a clear message of our intent going forward.

He said it was ‘massive for us’ to bring him to the Etihad Stadium and not only will he improve as a player by playing alongside the likes of Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony – with him suffering last season from not playing alongside Luis Suarez – he feels, as it does, it makes us a club more likely to seriously challenge for silverware again this season.

‘It became more difficult for them when Suarez left but what you will find is that he will have this kind of structure at City already – I mean, we’ve got Kun up front, we’ve got Bony, we’ve got so many players who will be able to link up with him we will be able to make him better as well.

‘We have great quality in the team but you can’t compete nowadays if you don’t improve every year.

‘Other teams improve, we need to improve and getting him puts us one step closer to being this team which can win trophies again – it’s very important for us.’

It certainly does, whatever you make of the fee involved and the like, signal our intent!

With him ‘quick, ‘very unpredictable’ and having ‘great determination’, these are things Kompany knows about him from playing against him, he added he feels we’ve signed ‘a special player’ that we’ll benefit from this, and more, now he plays alongside him.

‘You play against so many players with great quality but it’s the fact that he’s always willing to put in the extra yard.

‘That makes it that extra bit difficult when you have a player with quality who is not shy to run and put his body on the line – that’s a special player.’

The pressure will be growing on Sterling but if he’s half the player we expect him to be, and should be, in the future he’ll thrive on this and playing alongside the world-class attacking talent we have will make this transition even easier.

Kompany’s got faith, whilst I still feel we – at this stage – paid too much for him I’ve got faith we’ll get ‘Sterling service’ from Raheem this season and for several seasons to come!
