Striker nears Man City exit with Stoke in ‘advanced talks’, Southampton and Newcastle ‘rejected’

|

Liam Delap has been linked with a move away from Manchester City this summer with Southampton and Newcastle United showing an interest, but Fabrizio Romano says Stoke City are actually leading the race for his signature.

The Potters are in ‘advanced talks’ over a season-long loan move for the 19-year-old after Southampton and Newcastle had their offers ‘rejected’ by City. Delap wouldn’t be granted a permanent departure but will be allowed to leave for a season as he’s unlikely to get first-team football in 2022/23.

Delap joined the Sky Blues from Derby County in 2019 and has scored 10 goals with seven assists from 16 games for the U18s and scored 35 goals with nine assists from 36 games for the U23s. The England U19 international has proven his worth at youth level and is ready for the step up, but Pep Guardiola can’t give him the opportunity he needs.

Delap has made just six appearances at senior level for City, scoring one goal. He couldn’t get a game when Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus were at the club and remains low down the pecking order after Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez joined, so the 19-year-old is better off leaving for a year.
