Manager Manuel Pellegrini was obviously a delighted and a relieved man at full time in our game against AS Roma last night.

Minus Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero and numerous other regulars, City put in a professional performance and goals from Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta secured us the win we needed to progress in the Champions League and secure qualification from the group stage.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game Pellegrini was delighted for a number of reasons, not least that we are now really continuing to show our form on a consistent basis again and our season appears to be properly underway of late.

‘We won the game in the same way we have done over the last three weeks. We have recovered our normal performance. We are playing well and we are similar to the team that won the title last year. We are a solid team, we recovered the ball well and all the team were working together with and without the ball.’

The manager went on to say that before the game he had spoken to the players and pointed out that in his belief our worst performance of the season so far came against last night’s opposition in the home encounter, so he wanted a response, he wanted them to prove that showing wrong and show what they were all capable of, so he couldn’t have been more pleased with their response and wit how they played during what was a pressure driven and difficult 90 minutes.

‘I had a lot of trust in what we could do. We were sure that, by playing the way we have been in the last few weeks, we could win and we did.’

With numerous players out, it really was a case of all eyes to the line up ahead of the first whistle, but the manager reserved special praise for those who stepped into the team and rose to the occasion, so he wasn’t going to moan about having players missing, he wanted to congratulate the players who were available.

‘I don’t want to moan about players that are not in the team, it is difficult, but this team deserves more credit than the press give. We are not just about Sergio, the team have qualified to the last 16, playing the same way we do in the Premier League.’

With Kompany touch and go ahead of the game and ready for a potential return, the gaffer confirmed he would be available this weekend but the decision was to not push him last night to ensure he had fully recovered, and of course we had the bonus of David Silva getting 20 odd minutes under his belt as well as a second half substitute, so things are improving on that score and the added competition can only help us maintain this standard now and give us other options.

He ended his interview by saying that for him, the Champions League is over now for a while, and his only focus has to be on the Premier League and on making up the three points gap with Chelsea over the coming games this month so we can go into the New Year looking to push on further.
