Rags, that it should come to this. Having already seen The Blues rip the FA Cup out of his hands a year ago, Sir Alex Ferguson now announces liddle ciddy are your equals…

Resurgent City have gone toe to toe with United at crucial stages over The League Cup, The FA Cup and now the Premier League title across three stunning seasons. Relentless progress. The outpouring of relief that greeted the rags defeat of City in that League Cup Semi-Final two years ago didn’t last long and a demoralised Stretford hierarchy have since had to face The Blues coming back again and again.

Now United’s manager, entering the twilight of his career has ditched his belittling ‘noisy neighbours’ catchphrase ahead of a Manchester derby next week that he has billed as ‘a title decider:’

‘Manchester City are our direct opponents now. They are up against us to win titles. That is what our focus is on, the team who can stop us winning. We have to get used to playing Manchester City in important games. They are not going away. The support they have means we are going to be playing them in a lot of big games.’

Two years ago, such an admission from Ferguson would have been unimagineable.

File under we’re not really here…
