…time once again for Manchester City supporters to pinch themselves. Those much loved, much missed misty match days at Maine Road seem lightyears away from the look of our club’s home in 2010. Yet if numerous masterplans fall into place, that too will be enhanced in a way none of us could have ever envisaged in this world or the next 10 years ago in our agonising top flight exile.
The work began yesterday on preparing a vast area outside the stadium with the aim to attract £1 billion of private sector investment and create what the developers are calling ‘a world class leisure destination.’
The Manchester Evening News reports that Manchester City FC are committed to investing in the scheme which is being led by regeneration company New East Manchester and Manchester City Council.
£8 million is currently realising the sealing of old colliery mineshafts and ground preparation. Once that is in place, then the search for developers will intensify.
The MUEN talked with Steven Broomhead, CEO of the North West Regional Development Agency:
‘These changes present a regeneration opportunity on a scale unprecedented in an English city. It’s another piece of the jigsaw in enabling East Manchester’s community to look forward to a brighter future.’
And if that wasn’t enough for Mancunians to take in, The News Of The World has revealed that Manchester City have commissioned the planet’s top architect Rafael Vinoly to redesign Eastlands itself into a 75,000 seater super stadium.
The News of The Screws reckons there is a strong possibility that The Citizens hierarchy will in turn make a bid to host a 2018 World Cup Semi Final should England be selected to host the tournament, thus knacking the rags nailed on expectations of the game taking place at the swamp.
