Chelsea’s official statement today rejecting a second City bid this year for John Terry could signal the beginning of the City end for our skipper Richard Dunne…

Inter chief Jose Mourinho rates England captain Terry as the best centre back in the world and were you in Mark Hughes’ shoes with the tremendous financial clout he has, there’d be few better experienced heads out there to help bring on the MCFC Academy’s defensive graduates.

It’s clear Terry is a one club man having been at Chelsea all his career which is a rarity in itself in the senior ranks at Stamford Bridge. An incredibly difficult task to prize away.

But the confirmation that Hughes is now turning his attention to the heart of City’s defence points directly to a shake up and it’s highly unlikely that the brilliant young Nedum Onuoha will be making way for whoever comes in.

Everton’s Joleon Lescott and Arsenal’s Kolo Toure remain heavily linked by the hacks although at this stage, no official bids have been revealed by their clubs. City’s silent stealth bomber approach to transfers won’t be giving anything away.

So what of Richard Dunne? Last season was absolutely wretched for the big hearted Irishman as errors in judgement and the fact that City’s defence was infrequently over-run due to an inability for the team to defend as a unit left him ruthlessly exposed.

His recent brilliant performance for Ireland against Bulgaria showed precisely what Dunney is still capable of, but Planet Blue will be asking itself today whether or not Hughes now sees the skipper as something of a liability.

One thing for sure is that without Dunney, City would have been relegated earlier this decade as particularly in his partnership with Sylvain Distin, he repelled attack after attack.

Dunney turned his career around at City under Mad Kev’s guidance and we can certainly be very thankful for the efforts the then City manager made in developing a player who has been City’s rock for many seasons.

Do you think Richard Dunne will leave City this summer or will he be battling for us again next month? City fly to Hughes’ Bavarian boot camp next week. Will Dunney be on the plane?
