Manchester City supporters are about to be plunged into unavoidable bewilderment as the bridge burning wantaway striking striker Carlos Tévez flies back to a city he loathes…
Now this one, you really couldn’t make up. It doesn’t matter what spin Kia Joorabchian, the Argentine fall out merchant’s agent-ish adviser puts on it, his player his about to return to his employer with his tail firmly between his legs having publically dragged Manchester and England through the dirt only to find he’s priced himself out of the transfer market.
No point recounting what’s gone before here. It’s utterly indefensable and the player will forever be branded the ultimate football mercenary having fallen out unceremoniously with yet another club. In particular a club who have bent over backwards to accomodate his every wish. Save for a transfer on the cheap and wages whilst on strike, subject to his disgraceful appeal.
And so nowhere else to run, nowhere else to hide the charm offensive has begun as the usual calls are made and various hacks fanfare the new mood of contrition as the erstwhile El Apache prepares to board his jet.
Agent Paul McCarthy:
”Carlos will be back at Manchester City tomorrow…He wants to be back playing football and that’s what he’s best at doing. In the couple of seasons before this year, which has obviously been fairly awful in terms of everything that has gone on post-Munich, he was the leading goalscorer for Manchester City…He needs to be back, he needs to be pulling on a Manchester City shirt again, he needs to be doing what he does, and that’s score goals and help his team….he wants to help Manchester City to win the title and I think Roberto Mancini has opened the door now.’
Hmm. An awful lot of hardwork has gone in to forge a tremendous team ethic at City. You don’t stay top of the league for four months without it. Does the spectre of Tévez lurking about risk destabilising the remaining 13 game run-in of the league season.
Or could it galvanise it? Mancio has carefully coaxed 36 league goals out of his three young strikers Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero in this campaign. But a fourth striker with Premier League experience was identified by many Blues as a prerequisite that never materialised in January. Undeniably, Tévez with 44 league goals from 63 starts fits the bill on paper.
There is a murmured school of thought around town that Tévez is used to being savaged by fans so he’s hardly likely to be phased by what could come. And he’s never more dangerous to rival defenders than when he has a point to prove.
The player himself:
‘I want to go back to Manchester and win over the City fans…People turned their back on me but it’s normal. I didn’t understand. I’ve decided to return to City.
‘I know I have what it takes to revert the situation. I know it’ll be hard, but it’s a nice challenge…Now that I have a cooler head, I understand City fans. Back in the heat of the moment I didn’t. I did a lot of things for City. To be insulted by fans after what happened in Munich was something I didn’t deserve. I was very upset by everything and maybe I wasn’t seeing things clearly. That Bayern episode could have been avoided.
‘If it is true that Mancini said he will welcome me back if I’m fit, then I like those quotes. But he also said I was never going to be playing for him again. So I don’t know. I’ll do my best to be available and play. Mancini’s position got stronger when Kun Aguero arrived. I don’t know if he would have done the things he did if this was last season. But he never said anything. He got a better team this season and felt like making the decision.
‘I have been training on my own. I know I can be back on the pitch in two weeks. I’m willing to play.’
