Ex Thai Prime Minister and current Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra appears to have escaped corruption charges.
On 19 September 2006 while Frank was attending a UN meeting in New York a military junta known as the ‘Council for National Security’ overthrew Thaksins’ government.
In essence, the CNS suspected the government of being corrupt and decided enough was enough. Unfortunately for him, the now dissolved populist ‘Thai Rak Thai’ Partyleader was left out on a limb after having his passport revoked. In other words, the 58-year-old was told in no uncertain terms that he was no longer welcome back in the country of his birth.
Ever since the coup Thaksin has been fighting corruption charges, and at one stage it looked as though his £2.8billion fortune would be confiscated. However, if the case against Frank has definitely been dropped, all of his frozen assets will have to be returned, lock, stock and barrel.
