Long standing supporters of a football team often see players come and players go; they see managers come and managers go and they even see Chairmen come and Chairman go.
The wise ones know once the decision to sell a player or dispense with a manager has been made the real questions to be asked relate to the future not the past. From 6.27 pm on Saturday night it was a question of ‘The King is dead, long live the King’.
So debating the demise of Mark Hughes is rather like debating whether Lady Godiva wore a body stocking or whether Adolf Hitler’s lack of bodily parts had a detrimental effect on the Russian campaign…all very interesting but not the most pertinent issue and more likely to attract those who miss the wood for the trees?
Equally it is a waste of energy focusing on whether our manager was sacked ‘properly’ or ‘improperly’ provided he was paid his proper dues. Yes he will just have to endure living off a few million quid for the next few months until he picks up his next multi million pound job. That is the nature of the role and par for the course. As is the need for a football club to already have a replacement in situ. Can you imagine the outcry if our football club had done the opposite and waited a few months to find a replacement after giving Sparky the coup de grace?
No none of these issues should grab the attention of the true supporter but what should is the future.
What will the consequences be of having Roberto Mancini as our manager?
What does his time as a manager in Serie A tell us about his credentials, his style, his approach?
Will his lack of knowledge of the Premiership mean that 2010 is another wasted season?
How will the current squad respond and will he get the best out of those that are not performing to the level of their star bulling such Robinho and Adebayor?
Will the loyal Hughes players such as Bellamy and Santa Cruz still play to their true abilities?
Will we be seeking a new manager in 2011 or 2012 or will Mancini actually see out his contract?
These are the real issues, so let the real debate commence until we have a new manager again and can discuss him in the same terms.
