Here are my views on the sacking of Mark Hughes and the appointment of Roberto Mancini:
It is totally wrong, we all knew how close Mark Hughes was to the sack, he probably deserved to get the boot but if we are going to appoint Roberto Mancini as manager, a man who has no proven track record in English football then we are wrong. In my opinion, we should have kept Mark Hughes until the end of the season until the likes of Mourinho and Hiddink become available. He deserved until the end of the season. We have been poor, our form has been very up and down but we still sit 6th in the table.
Some of his signings were brilliant, City were heavily criticized for the signings of Craig Bellamy (for £12m) and Nigel de Jong (for £17m). But those two, along with Shay Given have been our best players this season. I have a lot of respect for Hughes, he is an honourable and proud man. He has actually done a lot for Manchester City as a club despite what anyone says.
Was he the right man for the job in the long term? Probably not. But we should have stuck by him until the end of the season. However, is Mancini the right man for the job? In my opinion, No. Only sack a manger when you know you have a replacement ready who will be bigger and better than the man you had previously.
One thing I can say about Hughes probably didn’t the skills to manage the very top sides but that should take nothing away from him. Tactically, he is pretty poor. He can be blind to obvious substitutions and appeared to have no Plan B. He managed to bring the very best out of the ‘mediocre players’ Ireland, Bellamy, de Jong. He just wasn’t cut out to manage the big ego’s (Robinho, Adebayor etc…) I wish him the very best.
