‘They look to bring in a striker’ – Journalist says Man City will ‘keep close eye’ on 28 y/o

It’s no secret that Manchester City want to sign a striker at the end of the season as they failed to replace Sergio Aguero last summer, but it’s unknown which centre-forward they’ll end up going for.

The Premier League leaders tried and failed to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season and now have their sights set on Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, but Pete O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that Kane might still be a transfer target.

He said: “I’m sure Man City will be keeping a close eye on him as they look to bring in their No.9 striker.”

A deal for Kane fell through last summer as City failed to match his £150m asking price. But with the 28-year-old still having two-and-a-half years left on his deal in North London, Tottenham aren’t obligated to cash in for less money just yet.

Whether City are willing to break their transfer record for the second consecutive summer transfer window remains to be seen, however. Their £100m acquisition of Jack Grealish hasn’t gone to plan, so the defending champions might turn their attentions elsewhere.

Haaland, for example, is 21 years of age and boasts a goal-to-game ratio greater than Aguero and Kane, so he might be a better investment. The Norwegian international’s release clause of €75m (£62m) will be active in the coming months too.
