La Liga released a statement days ago, condemning Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain for violating Financial Fair Play rules and Noel Whelan believes the allegations will be looked into.
La Liga filed a complaint to UEFA on the grounds that City continue to breach rules. They believe City are artificially inflating the market with money they haven’t earned through the club and Whelan predicts an investigation will follow.
He told Football Insider: “I think they’ll look into it because somebody’s making a complaint. I think they may be grasping at straws, to be quite honest. It’s more a bit of bitterness that they’ve not got two signings they wanted.”
Whelan refers to City beating Barcelona and Real Madrid to the signing of Erling Haaland and PSG convincing Kylian Mbappe to reject Real to stay in France. Both players have been given considerable payrises, so La Liga have responded by accusing both of illegal financial doping.
Whelan added: “It shows that they’re not the biggest giants in the world. If they come calling, people come running, but that’s not the case any more. They’re not the only giants in the world now. When you look at Manchester City and PSG, their capacity to take big players is just as strong.”
Whelan isn’t wrong. PSG signed Neymar from Barcelona by triggering his release clause and the Catalan giants did everything in their power to keep him. Then Barca lost Lionel Messi to the Ligue 1 giants after his contract expired. So with Mbappe rejecting Real to stay in France, PSG appear to be a more attractive proposition for a player than Spain’s top-two sides.
