With the switch of Ederson from Benfica to Manchester City, his reported £34.85million fee will break the record transfer fee for a goalkeeper that has stood since 2001.
Back in 2001 Gianluigi Buffon’s £33million switch from Parma to Juventus set a new record for the goalkeeper position and truth be told, no deal has got close since then and even Ederson’s almost guaranteed move will only break the record by £1.85million.
The nearest to that fee was Manuel Neuer’s move from Shalke to Bayern Munich back in 2011 at £19million with David de Gea’s move from Atletico Madrid to Manchester United coming in at £18million.
No one can question how good a move for Buffon and Juventus his transfer was and he’s moved than proved he could live up to that fee in the years since given their current domination of the Italian game, but whether Ederson can live up the hype now in the Premier League remains to be seen.
