Txiki Begiristain needs to renew Pep Guardiola’s contract, and fast

|

The longer this drags out, the more I have to shout at the top of my voice, Txiki Begiristain, what is going on?

For the life of me, I cannot understand what the delay or any possible hesitation is in handing our great boss an extended contract. The best manager in the world, I’m sure we can all agree on that.

Having won two Premier League titles at the Etihad Stadium, as well as a host of domestic cups to go with it, this is probably our most successful period as a club we’ve had in our 140-year history.

Guardiola is down to his final year, with his existing contract due to expire on 30th June 2021. Why has this been allowed to happen? What reasons are behind this?

There could be answers to this. One of which may be City’s stance and where they want to be in the next five years, do they see the 49-year-old as our long term manager? Bizarre if not. Also, there could be questions around Guardiola and his wage demands, which I can’t see being an issue.

For me, there shouldn’t be any second thoughts around this. His contract must be extended as soon as City possibly can. He is a world-class manager and has proved that for the past 12 years, ever since he became the head coach of Barcelona back in 2008, and was an instant success with the Catalan giants.

At no point during his managerial career has he failed to average a points-per-game average of 2.34, which has been with City since joining in 2016 and showering us in silverware in that process. The stuff of dreams.

As I write this, my thoughts around what Begiristain is playing at grow stronger and stronger. We have been pretty much faultless when it comes to recruitment, expanding our club as a business and performances on the pitch. Granted, last year wasn’t fantastic but we can forgive Guardiola for this, surely?

While we need to sign a top draw centre-back, it would be pointless in doing so if the Spanish tactician was to leave next summer. It makes no sense. Begiristain, take action now and give him the contract that he rightfully deserves.
