It’s been a bad week for football.
Not only are we just recovering from the Ben Thatcher situation, but the last week has seen Ashley Cole’s transfer saga ending in extrordinary circumstances culminating in Chelsea claiming William Gallas ‘allegedly’ saying, that if picked for Chelsea he would deliberately play badly or even score an own goal; serious allegations indeed, although with Kenyon orchestrating matters behind the scenes, I would be very cautious about believing anything that comes out of Stamford Bridge.
Now, and just to rub salt into the wounds, the Andy Cole transfer details are beginning to emerge including claims that if City didn’t agree to sell him just before the transfer window closed, Cole would retire from football. Again, with claim and counter claim, it’s difficult to get to the truth, but the upshot for the beleagured fans is just one more kick in the teeth.
Now I realise that loyalty and gentlemanly behaviour is rapidly disappearing from the game, but I’m disappointed in Cole that he felt he had to dig the knife in at City. I won’t repeat all the stuff that’s been circulating in the media suffice to say he seems to have blotted out from his short and selective memory that it was City who gave him a chance to rescue his failing career and it was City who have stood by him during his recovery from a serious knee injury.
When Cole joined City, I was one of his doubters, but like many I was won over by his on-pitch performances; I don’t mind admitting that. Cole was beginning to build a great relationship with the fans, but that’s all shot to pieces now.
I just don’t understand why he felt the need to slap City in the face as he left – what did we ever do to him? ( apart from extend his playing career in the top flight and bolster up his pension fund )
