With the internationals at the younger ages and the many injuries and playing a premier reserve league game less than 24 hours earlier; the quality of the starting eleven was pretty weak with only one starting player being over 18 years old.

City were two nil down by twenty five minutes from a close range header and a direct free kick.

Matthewson did well to save a penalty in the first half, but he was his usual uninspiring self for the rest of the game.

The controversial point of the game came in the first half when James Poole was pulled back on the edge of the area when clean through and only the keeper to beat. The referee failed not only to send the defender off, but he did not even caution him and only awarded a free kick and not a penalty.

Within 2 minutes of the re-start Accrington got their third from a scrambled headed of the bar from a corner.

City managed to get their consolation goal just two minutes later when Vladimir Weiss worked well down the left and into the by line before squaring the ball back to Ian Daly to finish from 3 yards.

City used all three subs to try to change things round but this made little difference.

City’s next match is at home to Preston next wednesday 7pm kick off.
