Vassell – Pearce’s Best Signing

Our web poll confirms that Darius Vassell has been Stuart Pearce’s most astute signing as City Manager with a massive 70% of the vote.

In his last season for Villa, Vassell looked jaded and demotivated, but his move to Eastlands has brought him a new lease of life, recapturing the sort of form that got him into the national side. At around £2m it has to be one of the best signings in the last transfer window and I bet Pearce couldn’t believe his luck when he completed the cut-price deal.

Full poll results – we asked:

Who has been Pyscho’s best signing?

Darius Vassell 70%

Georgios Samaras 15%

Andrew Cole 9%

Albert Riera 6%

Matthew Mills 0%

After a dream start, Samaras has faded recently mainly due to injury, although his best years at City are hopefully still in front of him, and without doubt is a currently a big crowd favourite.

I think the form and commitment of Andy Cole surprised many of us and he was unlucky to have his season ended eary due to a bad injury and hopefully he’ll be back next season.

Riera is beginning to settle down now and we have seen glimpses of his ball skills and strength. What he needs now is a good run of matches to get to grips with the English game and I think we’ll see a much improved player next season…assuming we sign him or extend the loan.

Poor young Matthew Mills didn’t register at all on our poll, but that’s not a surprise given he’s spent most of his time in the 2nd eleven since signing from Southhampton. I’ve seen him a few times in the reserves and he looks a very decent prospect indeed, and he’ll get more opportunities next season. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he turns out to be one of Pearce’s best signings during his tenure at City, but time will tell.
