Who’dve thunk it? As a crestfallen swamp is outsung and roundly goaded by Swansea fans, MCFC stands one game away from the title. Post match reaction from Tyneside…

Roberto Mancini:

‘It is better to score quickly but Newcastle played very well and made it difficult, but it was important that we finished the game well. It was difficult because Newcastle are a good team but I thought we deserved to win. We had a lot of chances but because we could not score in the first half we made it hard for ourselves.

‘Yaya is an important player for us because he has experience. He won with Barca, he won trophies and he brought to us this experience for this reason.’

‘If we beat QPR, we will be the champions. But at this moment, we cannot think about this. We need to prepare very well for the next game, only this. I am excited because we are on the top, but it is maybe not enough. One week more and if we play like we did today, we have a lot of chance to win.’

Alan Pardew:

‘There is no shame in this for us, if City win the league they will be worthy champions. Over both our games with them, I think they are the best side we have come up against this season…I thought their defence won them the game because we have been potent going forward, and behind that they have a goalkeeper who is probably the best in the division.’

Yaya Touré:

‘It is not finished. We have one game left and we have to be careful as QPR are fighting to stay in the Premier League. We have to continue to work hard and to believe…The manager told me to deliver today because it was an important game… Newcastle are a physical, strong team, but we need to keep improving but this is brilliant for us.’

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football writer:

‘It is in City’s hands now. And the manner of victory at Newcastle was that of a team that knew its moment had arrived.’
