VMC’s Some Might Say: FA Cup Progress

City now have a chance to lay the FA Cup ghost of Steve Cherry and Notts County in February 1991 to rest, but it wasn’t an easy passage to that long overdue revenge mission…

Roberto Mancini:

‘We conceded these goals tonight because we lost our concentration, especially in the last 10 to 15 minutes. We thought the game was finished, but in football you must keep concentrating until the referee blows for the end of the game…I prefer a 4-1, a
1-0 or a 2-0. If you don’t concede a lot
of goals, at the end of the season you
are sure to win something. If you keep conceding in each game, you will get to the moment when you don’t score enough to win. Because of this, we must improve.’

Sven-Goran Eriksson:

‘They were better than we were tonight, but we never gave up and from 3-1 down at half-time, coming back to 3-2, we’re in the game again and of course I’m happy with that. It’s a little difficult. They have some better players than us, but I think we need to be proud.

‘I am sure City are one of the teams who can win the Premier League. I hope they can win the FA Cup. It would be good for us to have gone out against the winners. What is happening at City does remind me of my time at Lazio. At that time we bought Christian Vieri for the biggest transfer fee paid. We sold him 10 months later for even more money. Lazio were spending a lot of money. It was a beautiful time. We won the league and overall won seven titles in three years. It was very good because in Italy, if you win the league and you are not Milan, Inter or Juventus, it is a very big thing.’

Vincent Kompany:

‘I believe that the FA Cup is very tricky. But we have shown our intent in the teams the manager has put out in the third round. We want to win every game. The important thing was the result…When we went 3-1 up we played some good stuff. It is nice to be through and as far as I am concerned the more games we play the better. It means we are being successful…We are fighting for three competitions and that is a positive not a negative. We have a big squad here now and a talented squad and it means that more players can get more games.’

IN THE VMC FORUMS:

Scragg:

‘Said it before, Tevez is a shite penalty taker. He does not try to out-fox the goalie. Despite his arrogance Mario is the best at the club but must be Milner and Barry for me, if Tevez misses another that is.’

Buzz Lightyear:

‘Well a gritty Leicester performance…One pen and one offside goal, but caused our defense problems all night. Yet you still had that feeling that City were not exactly busting a gut to score as many goals as they could tonight. 3-1 up when the ref Mark Halsey did a one two with the Leicester player Abe, who put through a just offside(not given) Dyer and he finished it well. City had a penalty after a tackle by the last Leicester defender who did not get a yellow or a red. Ok, hands up all those who knew that tevez was going to put it down the middle. Even the goalie knew that one and saved it well. Kolarov finally got on the score sheet from 20 meters out with a well placed shot into the corner of the net and ciuty came out winning 4-2 without really breaking sweat, but Leicester to their credit gave them some hairy moments.’

Doody:

‘Silva…I never tire of watching this man he is pure class…you have seen what happens when he doesn’t play, we seem to drift, but once he is on the pitch magic happens.’

fifthcolumnblue:

‘Zaba gets an honourable mention for his work at both ends of the pitch – the Tevez pass that set him free was uterly sublime, but he had to be there for it to work!’
