Manchester City are edging carefully and professionally towards Champions League qualification for the first time in the club’s history. Post match reaction to the latest win…

Roberto Mancini:

‘We made things hard for ourselves…we scored two goals and thought we had done enough. The pace went out of our play and that invites trouble. We had lots of chances and began by playing some fantastic football but then we slackened off. Games are not over until the final whistle. We cannot relax until 22 May. We need to get maximum points and see where we finish.

‘I have picked the same team for the last three games but maybe we will change things at Everton and against Spurs.

‘I hope Micah will be back for the Everton game and Pablo has hurt his shin and ankle but should be ok. Carlos is doing some work now and we will see.’

– Nigel De Jong will have a scan on Tuesday for a hip knock sustained in training last week.

Avram Grant:

‘At 2-0 they were on top of us, and then our reaction was very good…I thought we showed a lot of character. The second half was good. Our target is to take seven points from our last three games and we will try to take all nine but we are playing against teams that also want the points. But we believe if we use character we have shown in past games away against top teams, we can win games.’

Vincent Kompany:

‘Maybe last season we would have lost points in a game like this, we’re really happy because it wasn’t easy. The Champions League would be massive, not just for the group but for the club.’

Joe Hart:

‘It was a bit nervy but I think if we’d needed to step it up another gear, we would have done…we got the two goals early and I think it’s fair to say got sloppy and let them back in it, but I think if needs be we’d have got another goal.’

The VMCers:

Stu MCFC:

‘Some great performances – Yaya, Lescott, Silva, Zaba, even Barry looked quality today as did Milner (playing where he likes to play – take note Bobby!) when he came on. Zaba Man of The Match for me, a performance full of passion and a beautiful goal. – Kolarov still managed to look awful though, I don’t think he’s going to come good.’

Buzz Lightyear:

‘We got sloppy after we scored the second and let West Ham back into the match. We are missing that killer instinct, which we have to get to be a top club. Sloppy finishing and Balotelli, and Kolarov, too easily disposessed when in possession of the ball. Mario has to remember in this league that he is a marked man and needs to work harder. I hope Zabaleta is not badly injured.’

rojo2010:

‘Lescott and Zabs were outstanding today.’

Philly Blue Moon:

‘I’ve done the mathematical calculations for possible outcomes, but I don’t want to jinx the team!’
