Post Match Reaction to the painful defeat by The Mackems from the Stadium of Light movers and shakers and the VMC Forum history makers…

Roberto Mancini:

‘This is football, these situations can happen. We played fantastic football in the first half and had three or four incredible chances. But in football if you don’t score you take a risk. It can happen to any striker – it happened to me!

‘I think if we had scored in the first half we probably would have won easy. Carlos was upset afterwards, but that is normal.

‘Football can be very strange.’

The Blues’ boss was concerned at how City went ragged in the second period:

‘I don’t understand why, in the second half we were pulled round and allowed Sunderland to play much better than they did in the first half. They found it easier to play.

The problem Mancio faces now is that City do not have a chance to put this right immediately:

‘I am frustrated because now we have two weeks before we play again. It’s better to go into a break with a win or even a draw, but after the first half today, I would not have thought we could have lost this game.

‘It’s vital we understand why we lost this game because there will be times when the other team plays 10 men behind the ball. We must be patient, but if we don’t take our chances we will make it hard for ourselves.’

Steve Bruce:

‘I don’t think there was any doubt it was a penalty. Maybe it was what we deserved for our endeavour and attitude. It was an intense game and it was always going to be. City have an array of talent when you look at who was coming off the bench.

‘Man for man today it was all about what the Premier League is. We passed it well but the great thing is everyone stuck at their jobs and it was good to see us being resolute…Tevez will probably never miss a like that again but we were due a bit of luck.’

Darren Bent:

‘First half was about trying to contain them – they’re a top, top side. Second half, they gave us more space and the lads seemed to rise to the challenge. We probably had the better of the play in the second half.

sc2f100:

‘Bad play all around today, including the manager. Let’s put this one behind us and assume it’s an aberration. We’re still feeling out our best eleven, but we could really use Jerome and Alex back ASAP.’

Bluedub:

‘Lads, we can blame Micah all day, and it was idiotic, but the whole team performance in the second half simply wasn’t good enough. We gave a team of hoofers far too much time on the ball and allowed them to come at us. On the whole we probably deserved that defeat, for not taking our chances when they came, and, for, like I said previously letting Sunderland getting a foothold in the game.’

Potwash:

‘Whatever happens during the 90 mins it’s the team that scores the most that deserve to win. Sunderland popped one in, we didn’t – congrats to them for a deserved 3 points…’

‘I know we’ve got a long way to go before we are consistent, but I’ll tell you what – I’m almost tempted to vote for Micah Richards as MoTM, as it strikes me that every manager we’ve had since Pearce has seen SOMETHING in the lad that I for one have been struggling to see. What is it about him that makes managers pick him? Is it the stupid fouling? The almost total lack of positional sense? The way he jogs back to defend after one of his forays upfield?’
