Roberto Mancini is an uncompromising manager as numerous senior players across Europe have found out. He’s seen something in ex rag and now free agent Owen Hargreaves…

It’s dealine day and City’s summer of business deals, though mired in protracted financial brinksmanship is close to being accepted as highly successful if clubs are found for remaining senior fringe players, but Mancio has earmarked one extra piece of incoming business in a box labelled ‘big surprise.’

Erstwhile European Cup winner and England regular, the beleaguered Hargreaves has long shared the title ‘The English Patient’ with rag legend Michael Owen. Hargreaves was sent up the road by Taggart following breaking down during a failed comeback during a routine injury time scrape through win last winter at the swamp and found himself recently on West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Leicester and Spurs’ radars.

But the cunning Mancio has earmarked 30 year old Hargreaves’ experience which once saw him a star performer for both Bayern Munich and England as being of strong potential as City head deeper into a long season across four campaigns. The Champions League could be foremost in his mind where Hargreaves is concerned.

Numerous England players have reacted with surprise at the news that Hargreaves is undergoing extensive medical tests. Wayne Rugney’s response bordered on the negative but City players Joe Hart and Joleon Lescott were extremely positive and that’s the kind of upbeat vibe that now typifies life around SportCity.

Hargreaves can only benefit from that atmosphere, let alone The Blues’ state of the art medical and gym facilities that have been severely tested by Real Betis striker Roque Santa Cruz over the last two seasons…

In Mancini we trust…
