Thaksin Shinawatra and Manchester City’s futures are inextricably linked whether we like it or not…

The news today from Thailand that a stunned Pojaman Shinawatra has been sentenced to three years in jail for tax fraud will have sent shockwaves through the Manchester City hierarchy.

I’m no legal expert, nevermind not having a clue about events and history in Thailand, but I’m pretty sure that the cases already levelled against City’s owner could drag on for months. If his wife’s conviction is anything to go by, then there is every chance that the former Thai PM will be going down.

Exactly where this would leave Manchester City is anybody’s guess. It could be that a damage limitation strategy is already underway at the club in preparation for what could come as long term financial repercussions cannot be ruled out should the team fail to reach the heights the owner demands of it.
