Pablo Zabaleta has said that Manchester City are prepared to compete with anybody in the last 16 of the Champions League and he doesn’t mind who we are drawn against.

Speaking to the press following our two nil victory last night over Rome, the full back explained.

‘Don’t mind, whoever – I’m not going to say who we want. Just that we’re Manchester City and we’re prepared to compete with whatever opposition. We want to keep breaking barriers. We have the players to do it, and we’re going to fight to achieve the most possible.’

Zabaleta goes on to say that this is our fourth year in the Champions League and we are always learning about how to overcome the obstacles that this brings and he feels our experience of the competition definitely helped us pull off ‘the great escape’ from the group stage this season so he feels that we can only get better in the competition now and become more consistent, especially as our overall form has turned positively.

Of course with him scoring the second goal on the night, he commented that two goals in ten days was a personal achievement for him, and now having got three goals so far this season he’s hoping he can add a few more to his tally before the campaign comes to an end especially as three is the highest he’s ever scored before.

In his own interview, James Milner echoed Zabaleta’s thoughts when it came to learning about the competition as our experience in it grows.

‘We will take it step by step but I definitely think the quality is there to go far in this competition. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but the more seasons we play in the Champions League, and the more games we play in it, the experience helps and we get better as a team.’

As for the group stages and the hole it appeared we were in, Milner wasn’t going to talk about why we were in that hole, all he wanted to focus on was the fact that we managed to dig ourselves out of it, and for him that’s a huge positive and an experience we can take forward with us and again for him, points to the quality we have in the group.
