Whiz kid winger Vladimir Weiss is not getting ahead of himself, despite rave reviews throughout the sporting world – featuring on ‘Sky Sports Scout’, and cementing his place in the Slovakia squad during the World Cup qualification group stage.
Academy graduate Weiss acknowledges that he hasn’t played many games for City’s first team and faces an uphill struggle to remain a perminent feature in the international squad which managed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time ever under the guidance by none other than Vladimir’s father, Vladimir.
‘Nobody expected us to be there’, commented Weiss to the official website, ‘it’s a great achievement for Slovakia, the first time we’ve ever qualified. For me and my dad, it’s just unbelievable!
‘It’s seven months away and I’m not thinking that I’m definitely going. My mum will be there to support my dad and hopefully me. But I need to play more to be sure of getting in the squad.’
Stoke and Burnley have both been linked with January loan moves for the teenager and with the World Cup looming, speculation is running rife that the Slovakian will be looking elsewhere to see more regular action.
The talented 19-year-old made his debut in Mark Hughes’ team against Bolton at the end of last season, coming on as a substitute. Weiss completed his first 90 minutes in Manchester City’s memorable 1-0 victory over Barcelona in front of a crowd of 94,000 at the Camp Nou, in the prestigious Joan Gamper Trophy.
Despite being on the bench on numerous occassions, Wiess has yet to make a Premier League appearance this season, his only game to date coming in the 5-1 Carling Cup victory over Scunthorpe.
‘The last game (Scunthorpe) I was okay’, said the winger, ‘I went past my man a few times, that’s always a great feeling. My style of play does excite the fans, I like to beat players. But I’ve not played that many.’
‘I played for Slovakia when I’d not really played here. Since I got in the Slovakia team I’ve started every game. The fans back home support me, which is good to know.’
