Manchester is one of 16 cities currently vying to be one of the final 12 selected as host cities for England’s world cup bid, but what does it have to offer?

We find out, as we ask Scragg what they think it can bring to the table for the world cup bid…

1) Manchester has applied to be a host city, what are the pros of this?
There are so many pro’s, first of all you have probably got the tourism that would be generated. Then you’ve got the fact that all of the world’s attention would be turned towards Manchester. There are very well supported clubs in Manchester and lots of other clubs in the area that would guarantee support from the local residents. We have 2 brilliant stadiums – Eastlands and Old Trafford. Finally, we’ve already had European and International matches hosted there in the past which proves they are capable.

2) And the cons?
I couldn’t really think of any con’s.

3) Is Eastlands up to the task of staging a world cup game at the moment – if not will it come 2018/2022?
Definitely, the facilities are second to none. The club recently re-vamped the whole stadium and we have a capacity of 48,000. The club owners are also planning to expand the stadium to a possible 65,000 which could be ready for 2018/22. Eastlands has already held a major European final.

4) What is Manchester most famous for?
There are so many things that are famous about Manchester, to name a few: Music (Oasis, Take That), football, Cotton, The industrial revolution, the weather and the general hospitality of the people.

5) What would it mean to you to see the world cup converge on Manchester if successful?
It would mean a lot if the World Cup came to Manchester. I think people think of Mancunians and Northerners in a negative fashion, I think the possibility could change people views. It would regenerate the economy due to the tourism and bring in loads of new jobs.

6) Come on, hand on heart, tinted specs off, totally unbiased view will Manchester be successful with the host city bid?
Why not, it’s the 3rd biggest town in the UK. It’s very well developed. It has a really good transport network with buses, trams and trains. Also, it pains me to say it but it boasts the world’s most successful club in Man United.

7) Most importantly, do you think that England will be successful with the 2018/2022 world cup bid anyway?
I think England will win the bid. It’s got loads of big names backing it (e.g. Beckham, Platini) and it’s been 40 years since it was last in England.
