Pablo Moreno recently left Manchester City to join Maritimo on a permanent deal, the Portuguese club confirmed in late-July. He spent two years at the Etihad Stadium but failed to make an appearance at youth or senior level, so it wasn’t a shock that he moved on.

The 20-year-old was immediately loaned out to City Football Group side Girona upon signing for Man City, but he struggled to make a telling impact with two goals from 45 games, so the Premier League champions cut their losses and sold him this summer.

Moreno is still young enough to have a successful career, but big things were expected of him by now. The centre-forward was a product of Barcelona’s academy before being headhunted by Juventus in 2018. He played in their youth sides for two years before Man City took a stab at him, but he hasn’t managed to kick on.

Moreno, who represented Spain at U18 level, needs first-team football for the sake of his development, so it might be wise to take a step back now in order to take two forward in the future.
