Pep Guardiola didn’t consider an internal solution to his striker woes in 2022, quickly signing Julian Alvarez from River Plate in January and Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in May, but Manchester City had an in-form striker on their books that may have liked to put his name up for consideration – Nahuel Bustos.

The 23-year-old, who joined City on a five-year deal from CA Talleres in October 2020, scored 11 goals from 38 league games while on loan at Girona, firing the Spanish outfit to promotion by winning the Segunda Division playoffs (3-1 v Tenerife).

Girona will be playing in La Liga next season but Bustos is due to return to Manchester as his loan has come to an end. He spent two campaigns at the Estadi Montilivi, winning promotion from the third tier in 2020/21 and the second tier in 2021/22.

The uncapped Argentine scored six times in his last 11 league appearances to stake an unlikely claim for first-team football at the Etihad, but it’s all but certain Guardiola will overlook him. City paid nearly £6m for Bustos just two years ago and have no desire to use him in England, so his future is up in the air.
