Maybe if he was still at Blackburn, where Hughes suffered no fools this might have been the case. However, I think in Hughes` short tenure at City he has now realized that he has to take a slightly different approach with his City players than he did with his Blackburn squad.
This is not to say he will be going all-soft with the players, but I think Hughes is withdrawing some of his previous aloofness he had with this squad, which saw Mark Bowen acting as an agony aunt. Hughes has now stated ‘an open door policy` this may have been in place from the start but with the rumoured unrest with certain City players, it is nice to see that Hughes has attempted to solve some of the problems himself rather than leave it to Bowen.
Hughes took the reigns from Graeme Souness at Ewood Park so it was a like for like swap if you will in terms of personality. Nevertheless, his predecessor at Eastlands Sven Goran Eriksson was notoriously renowned for his softly softly approach with big egos. I feel this mentality in the long run would have been extremely detrimental.
Hughes` arrival therefore was always going to ruffle a few of the players` feathers. His attitude to training and wanting to turn Carrington into a ‘football factory` may have seemed alien to a City squad who had too much freedom under Eriksson.
In the short term this may prove an unpopular move with the players, but I feel all it will do is weed out the players who aren`t up for the fight (Elano et al) and reveal the players who are (Ireland et al) and in the long term it will turn City into a battle hardened team ready to finally win some silverware. I think this culture shock along with the British press linking us with every player imaginable has played a part in poor performances this season.
Hopefully when the transfer window ends it will put a stop to the media frenzy for a while and we can begin to concentrate on a season where we are starting to show form again in the league and still have a chance of winning the UEFA Cup.
Hughes came out yesterday and criticised the negativity aimed at City from seemingly the whole British press. For an aloof man he has certainly had his fair share to say recently, and this in a way is positive, if someone criticises his club he should feel obliged to defend it, albeit maybe not in the style of Rafa Benitez.
Before Hughes defended City Robinho also came out and defended the manager, playing down rumours of a bust up and saying that he respects Hughes as the boss. Maybe ‘Robbie` realizes the mistake he`s made or realizes he`s in for a stern telling off either way it is nice to see City`s biggest star defending his manager. If Hughes can therefore inadvertently get support from Robinho I`m sure he can get the rest of the squad behind him and turn this season, albeit belatedly into a success story.
