Why We Still Need Richard Dunne

Taking all sentimentality out of it, Hughes has said he will run with a 25-man squad and that he will only sell when it improves the squad and its BALANCE.

Sinbad sent us the following…

Okay, these make up 25:

Keepers

Shay Given (IRL)
Joe Hart (ENG)
Kasper Schmeichel (DEN)

Defenders

Wayne Bridge (ENG)
Richard Dunne (IRL)
Javier Garrido (ESP)
Micah Richards (ENG)
Nedum Onuoha (ENG)
Pablo Zabaleta (ARG)

Midfielders

Gareth Barry (ENG)
Nigel de Jong (NED)
Elano (BRA)
Martin Petrov (BUL)
Michael Johnson (ENG)
Shaun Wright-Phillips (ENG)
Stephen Ireland (IRL)
Vincent Kompany (BEL)
Vladimir Weiss (SVK)

Strikers

Craig Bellamy (WAL)
Benjani Mwaruwari (ZIM)
Carlos Tevez (ARG)
Felipe Caicedo (ECU)
Robinho (BRA)
Roque Santa Cruz (PRY)
Valeri Bojinov (BUL)

Then some to move on:

Shaleum Logan (ENG) – Loan?
Tal Ben-Haim (ISR) — Loan or sale?
Kelvin Etuhu (NGR) — Loan?
Jô (BRA) — Loan
Ched Evans (WAL) — Loan?

Now, looking at the balance, there are clearly too few defenders and too many attackers. So how would it help City in purely football terms, to sell Dunne? He wasn’t a sparkling diamond last season but he plays a lot of games, he’s our captain, he’s our longest-serving player. He brings continuity and stability.

My view is that even if we got Terry, we MUST keep Dunne. Terry has only been managing 28 appearances a year for Chelsea and if we have a good season we’ll need cover for 50+.

Even so I’d say Caicedo was more likely to be loaned out than Dunne sold. Dunne is very cost effective — basically a fraction of what we are offering Terry. And surely Garrido would be closer the exit than Dunne?

Sentimentality aside — and I do admit I like Richard Dunne — I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere. And I still think he’ll be kept if we bought Terry AND Lescott. In that case I would fancy us to sell Garrido because Lescott can easily play left back cover for Bridge.

All the talk about losing Dunne is to me half-baked and emotional. There is simply NO football reason to let him go, and plenty of reasons to keep him.
