A few mind numbingly boring performances ago I seat-shiftingly predicted that this could be a summer of unprecedented change at Manchester City. As soon as the second of two seasons swamped in unmitigated dross ended, up sprang the City board out of nowhere. Taxis were ordered in all directions and the takeover rumours intensified. I sense that we are creeping back into worry and uncertainty again.
A week or so later, the initial elation that followed the management clear out, the well accepted arrival of the Noel Gallagher approved Le Coq Sportif kits and the excited expectancy of a takeover have all but cooled.
Sylvain Distin’s decision to throw in the towel is cause for alarm. A whole new era has been widely touted but the athletic French stopper is having none of it. What’s all that about, then? It’s clear his decision was not about money. He gave MCFC some great service. Does he know something we don’t? The lad should be playing at the highest level but if he goes to Portsmouth then it will show us all just how far we have fallen, no offence to Pompey fans. I keep being asked who is running our club right now and it’s not easy to pinpoint who is at the controls. We can only refer to the vast array of speculation across the sportspages and internet and try to find some common ground. One thing for sure is that nobody at Manchester City is standing up transparantly and saying ‘This is where we stand.’
The NewsNowers amongst us will know that The Bangkok Post has referred to MCFC as ‘The Blue Ship.’ I’ve been called worse, but right now this ship is rudderless.
When you consider how our club and squad stand today, failure for a takeover to take place quickly is fast becoming almost unthinkable as preparations for a new season need to begin sharpish. Otherwise, the current board must shelve their plans and rebuild from scratch. Quite how that is done doesn’t bear thinking about.
MCFC needs to find some direction and fast.
