Will Pep Guardiola consider Man City youngster after POTM nomination? [Opinion]

|

Manchester City confirmed on Friday that Adedire Mebude was nominated for the PL2 Player of the Month after contributing five goals in January, but he’s yet to be rewarded for his form in the U21s with a call-up to the first-team.

The 18-year-old is having a fantastic season in City’s reserves, scoring nine goals with five assists from 15 Premier League 2 games, but he’s still not consistently training in the senior squad.

Mebude joined City from Rangers in 2020 and has gone on to score 15 goals with 19 assists from 30 games for the U18s, score three goals with one assist from seven games for the U19s, and score 10 goals with six assists from 22 games for the U21s.

With competition on the right flank from Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden, Mebude will obviously struggle for opportunities. But he can’t be too far away from Cole Palmer in terms of development, so a strong campaign in the reserves can’t hurt his chances for next season.

Mebude doesn’t turn 19 until May either, so he’s got time on his side to develop. If City have any dead-rubber games later this campaign, that might be how Guardiola gives him his debut.
