Wolverhampton Wanderers – Welcome To The Premier League

|

It was the 2011/12 season when Wolverhampton Wanderers last sat at England’s top table, and if I’m honest, I for one am looking forward to seeing some fresh blood.

I have nothing against last seasons relegated West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, and Swansea City but in my eyes change is as good as a rest. Plus, and to be brutally honest none of the above floated my boat in the first place. And so in my eyes, they won’t be a loss.

I am sure all three will bounce back at some point.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves won last season’s Championship at a canter – played 46, won 30, lost 7, and drawing 9. The Midlands club also knew how to find the net with 82 goals under their belt. Having said that I doubt they would have been so successful without a cash windfall that came their way in 2016, following a club buyout for around £45m by Chinese investment group Fosun International.

Since the takeover, the club has changed managers more times than I’ve had hot dinners. Okay, a slight exaggeration, nevertheless current head coach, Nuno Espirito Santo (Nuno for short) is the clubs fourth head coach in two years.

I mentioned earlier about the clubs cash injection and by the looks of it Wolves owners are happy to ‘splash the cash’ to keep the side in the Premier League, even if they break Financial Fair Play regulations.

For instance, the Shanghai-based conglomerate owners have already spent massively over the last two seasons. For example, £15m slipped out of their hands when they forked out a club-record £15million on Ruben Neves. And then there is Helder Costa (£13m), Ivan Cavaleiro (£7m), Romain Saiss (£3m), Roderick Miranda (£2m) and Barry Douglas for £1m.

Not short of a penny or two are they?

Vs. Manchester City

I remember Wolves playing City back in October in one of the Carabao Cup earlier rounds. City won the game 4-1 on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes, and I remember being impressed with their ‘have a go’ attitude.

The last time MCFC played a league fixture against the gold and black coloured strip was on Sunday 22 April 2012. On that occasion, City left Molineux 2-0 winners (Aguero and Samir Nasri).

Premier League survival?

I have a feeling fellow promoted sides Cardiff City and Fulham will probably struggle, having said that something in my water suggests Wolverhampton Wanderers will have more than enough to keep themselves playing against England’s elite for several seasons to come.
