On learning in his Norwegian base camp he was to have three observers watching his every move, Joel Santana reacted violently saying he would not allow them anywhere near the teams hotel training ground or even in the dressing room.
Mutiny? Perhaps for the first time there had appeared a shred of character. Then it transpired although the South African Football Association (SAFA) had announced their appointment in the Newspapers, none of the three wise men had as yet been directly approached.
Not even twenty four hours later Santana obviously fearing he had gone too far and retracted his earlier statement and said that he welcomed the observers as they would be able to see at first hand, the team spirit and general improvement he had inculcated in the team. None of this however has been obvious to the long suffering supporters.
The general team strategy appears to be hold possession for as long as possible, by a series of lateral passes interspersed with the odd back pass-a ploy that tends to take one further away from the opposition goal (precludes strikes on goal). Indeed, in the Norway game the only shot of any significance came from Mphela, who has been responsible for all the four goals scored in the last eight games.
As for Norway? No great shakes I’m afraid as they always looked the more likely to score and should have won by more than the single goal.
Now for the might of Iceland and a possible Brazilian farewell for Joel.
Opinion here is a little mixed with about eighty percent saying he should be fired immediately with the other twenty per cent obviously wanting him out, but under the surface many are worried that we are now too close to the actual event to risk a new coach.
