‘Would be a great signing’ – Paul Merson tips ‘top-quality’ Man City player to shine at Chelsea

Raheem Sterling is nearing a move to Chelsea this summer and many are talking about how foolish a decision it is for the 27-year-old to leave Manchester City, but Paul Merson looked at the deal from Chelsea’s perspective and said the FA Cup runners-up will be getting a ‘great signing’.

Sterling scored 17 goals with nine assists from 47 games  this campaign and has bagged double figures for Premier League goals in each of the last five seasons. The England international is joining a Chelsea side that finished third in the league last season while reaching the FA Cup and League Cup final, so they’re no slouches.

Merson believes Sterling will go on to be a brilliant acquisition, telling Sky Sports: “Sterling would be a great signing. If Chelsea went and got him, I think that would be a major signing, especially when you’re getting a top-quality international footballer who is at one of the top teams in the world.”

Sterling has scored 131 goals with 94 assists from 337 games since joining City from Liverpool in 2015, but his time at the Etihad Stadium looks to be coming to an end. A return to London looms for the 27-year-old as he’s unhappy with Pep Guardiola’s squad rotation.

Chelsea will have pulled off a major coup bringing Sterling to Stamford Bridge, as he was a key player in City title triumph just months before.
