Who is under threat?
Barry is ‘important’ to England so Capello will give him time, the problem is can we take a chance?
Many would think that it is Barry and Carrick that will both go, and chances are it will be, although I would have it as one or none, with Carrick missing out even if Barry did…This will not be the case though.
Joe Cole is another of Capello’s favourites but he has lacked games this season and only just squeezed into the 30.
Huddlestone is a quality footballer that ‘should’ get better, and will be a mainstay in the England squad in the future, quite possibly a regular in the side in a holding role yet South Africa is too soon methinks.
Another quality footballer, and someone that I think is criminally underrated is Parker, who should have been used more than he has – that said, as mentioned recently, he has had some quality players in front of him over the years.
Wright-Phillips has always been another of those ‘nearly men’, despite showing some decent form for England recently and chipping in with a couple of goals I am not sure that Capello will take him.
Who misses out?
Cole – a top class footballer but injuries have seen others advance ahead of him so I am not convinced he would make the starting 11 and others ‘seem’ better options from the bench.
Huddlestone – we can only take so many central midfielders, and despite the versatility that he offers this will come too soon for the Spurs man.
Parker – I wanted to say that he will go, and I would take him – probably ahead of Carrick, even if Barry is not fit as Carrick does not convince me on the international stage. Sadly the West Ham man will miss the plane.
Wright-Phillips – he will be unlucky to miss out but other wingers trump him. He, like others, often lacks that final ball but I think the other wingers in the squad offer a little more.
