Yaya’s Agent In LaLa Land

Well this is definitely going to get uglier isn’t it, following on from cake-gate and compassionate-gate, Yaya Toure’s agent has just played the race card.

Dmitri Seluk does seem to like the sound of his own name in the press, and he has now rather unbelievably claimed that if Yaya had been ‘white’ he would’ve already won the PFA and the FWA Footballer of the Year awards, having come third last season.

In an interview with The Times his agent stupidly and disgracefully said.

‘If he was white, 100 percent he would have won one of those top awards. I don’t want to talk too much about racism or the politics of football, but he does not get the praise he should get. Yaya has three times in a row won the African Player of the Year, but it’s different with the other awards.’

Presumably his problem with other awards are that they aren’t limited to African players, so there is a greater competition for the top prize.

‘I agree with Jose Mourinho when he said that the Player of the Year should come from the team that wins the title. I have very much respect for Suarez and Gerrard, but what Yaya did from midfield, not often a player can do this. Who was the best team this year? Manchester City> Who was their best player? Toure. Gerrard is really good but Liverpool finished second in the league and Yaya is third.’

And, was Toure our best player? Wouldn’t other individual’s hold claim to that title?

Or could it be maybe that in his mind his client is far better a player than he actually is, and maybe more important in his mind, because he pays him, than others would consider.

He goes on to say that Yaya is a bit upset about this, and he feels that FIFA should change something so it’s easier for African players to win.

It would seem it’s unfair for African players in his mind to be better than their competition, and Toure should just be handed whatever he wants irrespective.

I wonder what it might be next, will his agent claim City force him to play when it’s raining? Aren’t his Wotsits cheesy enough? Is his meal at the club one degree too cool?

He’s obviously had a tough time of late owing to the tragic loss of his brother, and grief can do strange things to a person until they work through it, but this is now the third ridiculous moment from the player and his agent in pretty quick succession and it’s making it very difficult to maintain sympathy for him or to treat anything that is now said by either of them seriously.

This is the exact moment his agent should be keeping his mouth shut and not adding to the fire, but instead protecting his client at what has to be a testing time for him.
