According to a piece by Man City correspondent Jonathan Smith for Goal, Pep Guardiola is eyeing a new assistant coach in the summer following Mikel Arteta’s departure in December – prompting many City fans to vote for one man to take the job.

Detailed in his piece, Smith claimed that, in a hypothetical scenario, ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso would be one of many ideal candidates to fulfil the role under Guardiola.

Other names that were mentioned include the likes of Andreas Iniesta, Domenec Torrent and Rodolfo Borrell – but it’s clear by these responses that the majority of Sky Blues wish to see Alonso take up the mantle.

City supporters described Alonso as a ‘genius‘ and ‘Spanish don‘, with these fans thinking he would be more than suited to work under the tutelage of our manager.

Before Arteta parted company with the Sky Blues, he won trophies galore alongside his compatriot in the dugout – overseeing two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, two Community Shields and one FA Cup triumph.

It’s clear that, with any luck, most of our fans will be hoping an Alonso and Guardiola management team would be able to replicate similar success.

Here’s what they had to say on Twitter.
