0 goals in 8 games, played out of position – Man City exit hasn’t gone to plan for 27 y/o [Opinion]

Pep Guardiola recently spoke about the reasons behind Raheem Sterling’s move to Chelsea and Vital Man City noted how the 27-year-old was playing more football since leaving Manchester City, but his form appears to be spiralling.

Sterling has missed just one game for the Blues this season and started strongly with four goal contributions from his first five league appearances, but he’s not scored in a month-and-a-half and is playing out of position, so his exit hasn’t gone the way he hoped.

Sterling has made 16/17 appearances in all competitions (94%), scoring four goals with two assists. He’s amassed 1249 minutes of playing time from a possible 1530 (81.6%) but is firing blanks of late.

The England international hasn’t scored or made an assist in the Premier League since August, hasn’t scored in the Champions League since mid-September and hasn’t made an assist for nearly four weeks.

Sterling was deployed in a makeshift wing-back role as Chelsea suffered a 4-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday too, so he might not be enjoying his football right now.

The 27-year-old left City due to Guardiola’s squad rotation policy, revealing it made him feel like his role in the team was diminishing.

Sterling was benched for big matches and couldn’t get a consistent run of starts under his belt, but he can’t be convinced he made the right decision to leave while Graham Potter is playing him out of position.
