Mark Hughes must be so fed up with the press, I feel sure he will have cancelled his deliveries from his local newsagent. Each story printed about City talks either of unrest in the dressing room or of how long is left on the Welshman’s reign.
It is hardly surprising given the extraordinary events at Eastlands – fabulously wealthy owners, superstar signings, humiliating Cup defeats, facile league defeats and allegations of no good by players off the field.
Then there is that appalling away record – just one win away from home all season and only marginally better points haul from away games than Fulham, Stoke and West Brom.
All in all, just another ordinary day at City – assuming you’ve followed them as long as I have!
However, of interest today are reports that Jose Mourinho has allegedly hinted to friends he wishes to return to the Premier League next season – and what better place for him to come to than Manchester City?
Mourinho, whose record of accomplishment speaks for itself, is exactly the ‘Special’ manager that Manchester City need and if available, MUST get.
However, would Mourinho come to City? As far-fetched as it may seem to some, I think the answer is ‘yes’.
Firstly, he would have far more resources to mould his team than he ever did at Chelsea. Producing another successful Premier League side would be the perfect slap in the face it would give to Roman Abramovich given the way his time ended there.
Secondly, the opportunity of turning City into a force right on the doorstep of his long time adversary Ferguson, may prove too tempting a proposition to turn down.
Imagine the scowl on Fergie’s face should City actually have the audacity to win anything. Also, the sheer scale of City’s ‘project’ in turning them into a world force and outstripping fierce rivals United may prove intriguing to him.
Time will undoubtedly tell, but for me, the summer cannot come quickly enough.
