Agreement reached as Man City close in on second summer signing

|

After getting Erling Haaland, Manchester City made signing Kalvin Phillips a priority this summer following Fernandinho’s departure and it appears they’ve finally made a breakthrough in negotiations.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Friday evening that an agreement has been reached between with Leeds United. City will pay £42m up front and the deal could rise to £50m depending on add-ons.

The 26-year-old reportedly turned down offers from other clubs to work with Pep Guardiola, though it’s unknown whether suitors actually made a similar offer to City’s.

Phillips made 233 appearances for Leeds since rising through the youth ranks to the first-team, scoring 13 goals with 13 assists. The England international didn’t have the best final season at Elland Road, however, starting just 18 of 38 Premier League games and spending large portions of the campaign out with a hamstring injury.

Although City have wanted the 26-year-old all summer, it’s a surprise that a deal is getting over the line. Phillips isn’t a typical Guardiola player and has Rodri standing in his way of getting playing time, so it remains to be seen what his role will be next season.

Nevertheless, City will be signing one of the best ball-winners in the Premier League, so he does add something to the squad.

City getting business done. Only 45 million for Phillips plus 5 million coming back to City for Gaybi. English quota being addressed.
Haaland, Alvarez, Phillips and also Mbete has extended his contract and a free transfer 29 year old German keeper coming in as cover. Left full back position next to fill. Then bring it on. Well done Pep Ferrano and Tixxi
