With a host of players still to report back for pre-season training, Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is understood to be preparing to field a B team against EB/Streymur.

Brazilian playmaker Elano, Croatian defender Vedran Corluka and Swiss midfielder Gelson Fernandes are still on holiday after spending the summer playing for their countries, nevertheless they are expected to join up with the rest of the squad early next week when the party returns from their German training camp

Ecuador international Felipe Caicedo and Zimbabwe’s Benjani are also scheduled to return to Manchester on the same day after their recent World Cup qualifying efforts.

‘We have touched on the subject of whether or not they will play but won’t come to a conclusion until we see how they are when we get back to England,’ confirmed Hughes’ assistant Mark Bowen.

‘Hopefully, we will have a long campaign in several competitions ahead of us and we don’t want to be risking players who are not ready to play.’

City begin their UEFA Cup quest on Thursday 17 July when they travel to the Faroe Islands to play their first qualifying round, first-leg game against EB/Streymur.
