The statement read: ‘Manchester City Football Club can confirm that it has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League.’

Pep Guardiola has spoken out about the European Super League and is demanding an answer on why it was formed behind the backs of supporters, staff and the players.

He said: “No one has given any more details (to me) about what is going to happen or what is going to be created. The right people have to clarify, they have the obligation and duty as soon as possible to come out all around the world and clarify what the situation is and why they took their decisions.”

Guardiola also questioned why Ajax were ignored given their impressive history in Europe and suggested UEFA also have blood on their hands for a lack of communication.

He added: “Why is Ajax Amsterdam who have four or five Champions League titles but will not be there? They have to clarify that for me, for all of us. UEFA have also failed here because they should have communicated and been in touch earlier.”

City have a lot to play for this season. The Sky Blues can seal the Premier League ahead of bitter rivals Manchester United if they win four more games. They also have a League Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur to play on Sunday while locking horns with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals on April 28.

The last thing City needed during the run-in was headline-grabbing controversy. Fans aren’t going to be kind to them on social media and at their home ground.
